The application of sodium hexametaphosphate in cold water treatment

1.Scale inhibitor (anti-scaling agent)

SHMP can form soluble complexes with metal ions such as calcium and magnesium in water, preventing them from generating calcium carbonate, calcium sulfate and other scale substances.

Applicable scenarios: Cooling water systems, boiler water treatment (especially suitable for low-temperature or medium-temperature water quality).

2. Dispersant

It can prevent the accumulation of suspended particles, keep the inner walls of pipes or equipment clean, and is suitable for industrial circulating cold water systems.

3. Corrosion inhibitor assistance

When compounded with other corrosion inhibitors (such as zinc salts), it can enhance the anti-corrosion effect on metals (such as steel and copper).

Precautions in cold water treatment
1. Temperature influence

SHMP dissolves slowly in cold water and should be thoroughly stirred or pre-dissolved before addition.

High temperature (>60℃) will accelerate its hydrolysis to form orthophosphate and reduce its effect, but it has better stability in cold water environment.

2. Water quality adaptability

High-hardness water: The dosage needs to be increased (usually 10 to 50 mg/L), but excessive dosage may lead to phosphate scale.

pH range: The optimal pH is 7 to 9. Its efficiency will be reduced in acidic or strongly alkaline environments.

3. Environmental Protection and Regulations

SHMP contains phosphorus and its discharge must comply with local environmental protection standards (possibly requiring phosphorus removal treatment).


Sodium hexametaphosphate has a low cost and good anti-scaling effect. Its hydrolysis products may promote the growth of microorganisms in low-temperature and medium-hardness water
