Physicochemical Properties
White transparent crystal or powder (industrial products may be slightly yellow due to impurities). Tasteless or slightly sour. Soluble in cold water (about 10 g/100 mL, 20°C), with higher solubility in hot water. Slightly soluble in ethanol (approx. 5.7g /100 mL, 20°C).
Binaric acid with stronger acidity than acetic acid (pKa₁=1.25, pKa₂=4.14). Reacts with bases, metal oxides, and carbonates to form salts. Under acidic conditions can be oxidized by strong oxidants to produce CO₂ and H₂O. Forms soluble complexes with metal ions (e.g. Fe³+, Al³+), making it effective for metal cleaning and rust removal.
